Helpful tips on how to healthily manage your toddler’s tantrums:
Every mom knows a toddler tantrum can happen in the blink of an eye. One minute he is smiling, laughing and telling you “you’re the best mom in the world,” then in a nanosecond, he is melting down in the middle of the grocery aisle because you said “no” to the sugar cereal. Enter anxiety and embarrassment for mom. Don’t worry Mama, there are ways to ease this stressful moment.
Breathe. Take a deep breath. Then another. Your posture and tone does play a part in whether or not his irrational meltdown is going to diminish or escalate. Don’t match his stress level. Check out this article on the do’s and don’ts of managing tantrums.
Be confident in your parenting. Don’t let the stress of what other people think influence your reaction to the tantrum. Proceed to respond with the plan you have set in place. Even if it means you’re in the grocery aisle for 20 minutes. Enduring the stares is tough, but committing to the solution that works for you and your child is worth it.
Determine the cause. It’s crucial to understand the triggers. Is she frustrated because you can’t understand her, does she want something or is she tired, hungry, etc …? You may not be able to know exactly what is setting off this little person’s world, but whatever she is feeling is real to her. Get on her level, look her in the eyes, and show her you care about what she does.
Give consequences. Learn your child. Talk to your parenting partner on what you feel is best as a consequence for tantrums you feel are outright defiance, be consistent. Consistency is everything.
